1966 Chevelle Super Sport 396

Those were major sounding words back in 1966 when these came out. They were definitely cars to be aware of on the street. These 396 Chevy motors were directly linked to the “Mystery 427” motors that Chevy “back-doored” at Daytona and the other big stock cars races in 1963. Chevy at that time was not OFFICIALLY racing. The Mystery 427’s were semi-hemi and had what was called at the time Porcupine Heads. They were called this because the valves were canted as that they could make more horsepower. The 396 had the same block as the 427 and also had the Porcupine Heads and was a Semi-Hemi.

Gone finally were the boxy looking Chevelles. These Chevelles looked fast and racy and NOW the name Super Sport was on a car body that fit the name.

Let me tell you about this SS. What is really rare is the fact that it has its original motor. Not many Muscle Cars of the sixties have their original motors. It has a Muncie 4-speed with Hurst linkage, strato bucket seats and that real cool console with the clock. The owner told me he had just rebuilt the 12 bolt 3:73 POSI. It has a stereo CD player with a 4 special speakers, plus polished aluminum weld wheels. He also out in a set of gauges on that you could actually read what was happening with your car.

The important numbers on this car are the FIRST THREE in the serial number which are 138. These three numbers mean that it came from the FACTORY with a 396 motor and was a Super Sport NOT a plain Chevelle. Since I primarily deal in Mustangs and Shelby’s, I have this SS 396 priced to sell quickly. The Classic Car NADA value guide has the following values for a 1966 Chevelle 396 Super Sport; low - $12,950, Average - $27,200 and High - $53, 900. I would overall consider this car to fall in the above average range. However, we are asking less the average NADA retail for a quick sale.  Please note how nice and detailed the engine, interior and trunk areas are. You even have a jack, lug wrench and spare tire wheel. Last but not least, the underside is very clean and the floors and frame rails are in excellent condition.
